Subsequently, in 1970, Ong Sam Bee Company was set up by Mr Ong and his father and they worked together. The company supplied its coffee and tea products to the aforementioned places. In 1985, some of Ong Sam Bee’s employees decided they wanted to leave to start out a company of their own and Mr Ong became their supplier. Thus, the company gradually became a supplier to suppliers of coffee powders and tea. In the same year, Ong Sam Bee began the export of coffee beans and tea products to other countries.

Ong Sam Bee’s overseas customers come from countries such as Malaysia, Brunei, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Japan, Vietnam and Indonesia. Mr Ong acquires many of his customers from referrals of satisfied customers, network connection with friends and agents, and the word of mouth. What makes Ong Sam Bee stand out in the industry? The company has been around for a long time and has been well-established as a leading supplier of coffee beans and tea dusts. Mr Ong and his staff possess good business ethics where they are always honest to their customers. He enjoys a good relationship with his competitors where together they work hand in hand to trade products which they will subsequently sell.

One of the memorable challenges Mr Ong faced in the business was back in the 1990s during the financial crisis where many of his customers from Malaysia owed him payment and took a long time to pay. At that time the exchange rate between the Singapore dollar and Malaysia dollar was shifting considerably to favour Singapore. Thus, when the payment was finally collected, it was usually below the market rate. His business lost a significant amount of money.

Mr Ong presently has both his sons Kenny and Desmond working in the company as co-directors. He is currently teaching and guiding them, preparing them to be ready to assume full control of the business once he retires. Despite this, Mr Ong still works from Mondays to Sundays, overseeing the business operations. Kenny and Desmond provide consultation services for people who intend to set up their own business in the coffee industry. They would educate the people about successful business practices to adopt and the different types of coffee. In turn, a business relationship could be established between both parties.
